The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a coalition of 160 international companies united by a shared commitment to sustainable development via the three pillars of economic growth, ecological balance and social progress.

Our members are drawn from more than 30 countries and 20 major industrial sectors. They include AOL Time Warner, AT&T, Bayer, BP, Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, and many others (complete list of member companies)

We also benefit from a Global Network of 40 national and regional business councils and partner organizations involving some 1,000 business leaders globally.

The WBCSD was formed in January 1995 through a merger between the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) in Geneva and the World Industry Council for the Environment (WICE) in Paris. Since then, we have become the pre-eminent business voice on sustainable development issues and are playing a leading role in shaping business’s response to the challenges of sustainable development.

Our mission

To provide business leadership as a catalyst for change toward sustainable development, and to promote the role of eco-efficiency, innovation and corporate social responsibility.

Our governance

We are a member-led organization. The WBCSD is governed by a Council composed of the Chief Executive Officers of its member companies, or other top-level executives of equivalent rank. The Council meets annually to decide on the organization's priorities and to discuss strategic issues connected with sustainable development.

The Executive Committee oversees the management of the WBCSD, and also meets annually. Responsibility for the day-to-day management of the WBCSD's affairs lies with the president in Geneva, who is assisted by a staff secretariat.
